Addressing Workplace Burnout In The Healthcare Industry

It is well known that health practitioners face burnout. In the health industry, the pressure to maintain productivity, safety, and efficiency is immense. Employees are often working in challenging environments, whether in the operating room, the intensive care unit, the emergency room or in the labour and delivery suit, all facets of the job demand peak performance. This unique blend of physical and mental stressors makes the healthcare industry particularly susceptible to burnout and turnover.

Understanding why Health Practitioners Are Burning Out

Grief and distress: Health professionals experience tremendous grief and distress in response to their client’s suffering. Certain health care providers such as oncologists, and palliative care specialists feel the stress more intensely. What creates the most challenge for managing the stress, and feelings connected to it, is often the unprocessed grief. These unprocessed emotions can compromise a clinician’s personal well-being, leading to burnout, moral distress, compassion fatigue, and poor clinical decisions. All this adversely affects the care your clients receive (Sanchez-Reilly, Morrison, L.J., and deLima Tomas, 2014).

Long hours and difficult schedules: Shift work is described as any shift outside of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. When health practitioners work long work hours it increase the risk for short sleep duration and sleep disturbances. According to Caruso (2015) in Negative Impacts of Shiftwork and Long Work Hours, “thirty-two percent of healthcare workers report they do not get enough sleep”. To counteract this, employers need to ensure employees have sufficient downtime between shifts to recover physically and mentally, and make healthy sleep habits a priority in their workplace health promotion programs. The ProMind Experience™ prepares staff to build sustainable health practices, in all areas of health and wellbeing.

Inadequate mental wellness supports: Health practitioners burnout because they’re not accessing the right tools. Although many employee benefit programs have amped up their employee Mental Health Resources, such as counseling services, stress management workshops, and wellness programs, it’s not enough. Health practitioners in particular need a multitude of interventions. This is why The ProMind Experience is a more cost-effective solution.
